Main Purpose of Role

The role of Healthcare Analyst covers a wide range of analytical activity in order to provide high quality insight and information reporting to a variety of clients. Regular tasks will include importing, cleaning, transforming, validating or modelling healthcare data with the purpose of understanding or making inferences for decision or management purposes.  The job also includes presenting data in charts, tables or written reports, or designing information solutions such as dashboards to present data to healthcare data users. The role would suit an experience analyst and we are also willing to train someone new to the industry if you can demonstrate the right competencies.

The Healthcare Analyst will provide support to the analytical team and assist in the planning and allocation of tasks.  They will take a lead role in liaising with clients and senior management staff within WHC in order to establish user requirements as well as deliver quality projects efficiently and on time.  They will attend regular production meetings and contribute to the development of innovative and exciting analytical products for our clients.

The Healthcare Data Analyst would ideally have expertise in understanding the secondary datasets that are used predominantly within this role, including HES (Hospital Episode Statistics), QOF (Quality and Outcomes Framework) and prescribing data.  They also expected to keep up-to-date with new healthcare datasets as and when they become available and to develop a clear understanding of the methodology behind them.

If applying for the senior role, it is expected that you will provide a ‘directing’ role in supporting other analysts in the team by managing projects and delivery, as well as training and knowledge dissemination.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Healthcare Analyst will have the following responsibilities:

  • Takes the lead in the development of new products and tools
  • Develops and documents new analytic methodologies in collaboration with project lead
  • Participates in the development of analytical reports, including conducting analysis, summarising data and interpretation of results
  • Provides consultative support and responses to requests for information from internal and external clients
  • Leads on the development of analytical techniques and comparative analyses as needed
  • Provides input into providing effort estimates to account managers and providers
  • Assisting with planning and scheduling jobs
  • Provides project management over other analysts in the team on individual projects where required
  • Coach and mentor other less experienced members of the analyst team
  • Work to maintain and improve peer review and quality assurance processes
  • Participates in other special projects
  • Keeps current with respect to the relevant research literature and regular updates in key NHS datasets
  • Participates in the development of materials (e.g. educational, media, etc.) for dissemination of findings and knowledge translation
  • To assist in the analysis of research findings and deployment of results by checking data, analysing results using Excel spreadsheets, creating/editing PowerPoint presentations, writing reports.

  • Advanced user of Excel and VBA
  • Ability to use SQL to extract and manipulate data (Senior)
  • Experience of communicating technical information in an accessible manner

  • Full understanding of NHS, Hospital Episode Statistics, Mental Health and Diagnostic Imagine datasets
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical and analytical techniques (Senior)
  • Desirable: Able to perform HES data linkage and longitudinal analysis (Senior)
